Our non-traditional user conference is tailored for organizations, destinations, and event planners who want to succeed at event housing.
With a clear focus on room block management, Unconvention is a must-attend conference designed to boost event housing, uncover new revenue streams, and stay current in the industry.
We don’t believe in sitting in one ballroom all day, it’s too boring! Every year we bring our people together and engage through a diverse offering of fun learning opportunities and creative networking events at various out-of-the-box venues.
Unconvention 2024 took place May 14-17 in Whistler, BC, Canada.
The education at the Unconvention is created with our core value of Thirst for Learning in mind; every session is intended to help you grow professionally and/or personally.
Our primary focus is on best practices around event room block management and how to be more efficient within the Meetingmax software.
Check out our past agendas below for an idea of the education you can expect.
Networking can sound daunting to some; what we really strive for at the Unconvention is connection. It is the perfect opportunity to connect with industry colleagues (and friends!) to share event room block management best practices.
We make every effort to foster an environment of open discussion with your peers, those who face the same housing situations you deal with on a daily basis.
2024 Agenda
May 14 - 17, 2024
Sculpting Relevance
In 2024 the gang was back together! This marked our first in-person Unconvention since 2019. Five long years called for an extra special user conference, so we took our clients to where Unconvention first began… Whistler, BC!
This Unconvention showcased 12 unique venues, 10 inspiring education sessions, and 4 fun experiences including Shannon Falls, an authentic Indigenous dreamcatcher workshop, axe throwing, and chair yoga, throughout the stunning backdrop of Whistler, BC.
Education sessions highlighted practical uses of AI for event housing managers, expanding event tech offerings through Meetingmax APIs, how to stay ahead of 2024 hotel contracting trends, and May-Mania a fun spin on March-Madness which saw our clients vying to win the best system hack in Meetingmax.
2023 Agenda
May 31 - June 1, 2023
90's Throwback
2023 taught us that the events world was regaining its stride, returning with newfound vitality and resilience. It was a bustling period for everyone in the industry, striving to recreate spectacular events, sometimes with limited resources. That’s why we decided to host another virtual Unconvention, putting time management and budgets at the forefront.
We were determined to deliver an experience filled with enjoyment, learning, and connections right to your screens. Drawing inspiration from some of our favorite 90’s movies and TV shows, we embarked on a journey to engage like never before.
From playful games to captivating presentations and a riveting keynote by AI specialist Nick Ning, we explored the incredible potential of AI.
2022 Agenda
February 9 - 11, 2022
Our First Virtual Unconvention!
In early 2022, events were still impacted by Covid-19 and Unconvention was no exception. Due to the uncertainty of cross-border travel (MMX HQ is in Canada and the majority of our clients are from the United States) we decided to take Unconvention virtual!
This agenda was fun to plan as we had to think creatively to create education sessions that still upheld our values of being engaging, out-of-the-box, and unconventional.
We used many virtual breakout rooms to keep converstions flowing, and even left one session unscripted which ran entirely on audience suggestions.
2020 Agenda
Cancelled due to COVID-19
EduPLAYtion
For our 2020 user conference we focused on two key elements of Unconvention; education and play. We’ve fused these together to create eduplaytion.
We were super excited to take guests to over 11 unique Vancouver venues and host 14 insightful education sessions. This event was gearing up to be one of our best yet with ample opportunities for learning about room block management and having fun along the way (think skeeball, pinball, improv, painting, and more!).
Unfortunately COVID-19 rocked the world and we made the decision to cancel this event as it wasn’t safe to proceed. We look forward to taking inspiration from this event and applying it to future user conferences.
2019 Agenda
April 1 - 3, 2019
Seasons of Change
In 2019 we went to 8 unique venues, hosted 15 education sessions, had endless networking opportunities, an interactive app, and one highly entertaining experience dinner.
Education sessions included how to grow your housing business, how to effectively brand your events in Meetingmax, and best practices for training your hotel partners. Miki Agrawal keynoted an outstanding session on Sunday morning around how to disrupt an industry.
Phew, that was an inspiring few days!
